Direct answer

An induced gas flotation unit is selected by matching vessel hydraulics, gas dispersion, skimming, solids removal and chemical conditioning to the produced-water feed. Headline flow rate is only the starting point; reliable package design depends on contaminant form, variability, required outlet quality and adjacent treatment stages.

For procurement, define normal, minimum and peak flow, temperature, pressure, oil-in-water concentration and test method, suspended solids, droplet-size distribution, gas composition, chemicals and the treated-water destination.

What an IGF package is expected to do

IGF disperses gas as small bubbles through produced water. Bubbles attach to oil droplets and selected solids, lowering their effective density so they rise to the surface. A controlled skimming system removes the floated layer while treated water leaves below it.

The package is not simply a large tank. Inlet devices, cell geometry, recirculation, level control, surface removal and sludge handling all influence separation.

Characterise the feed before sizing

Total oil-in-water does not show whether oil is free, dispersed or emulsified. Droplet size, solids, density difference, viscosity and surfactants can materially change flotation behaviour. Samples should represent normal production and credible upset cases.

Existing demulsifiers, corrosion inhibitors and scale-control products must be disclosed because their interaction can help or hinder bubble attachment and influence downstream processes.

Hydraulic design and residence time

The vessel should distribute flow evenly and avoid short-circuiting. Designers need to consider active volume, compartment arrangement, turndown, surge behaviour and the time required for floated material to reach the skimming zone.

Oversizing can weaken mixing at low flow, while undersizing reduces separation time. Multiple cells or trains may cover a broader envelope than one vessel selected only for peak capacity.

  • Normal, minimum and maximum continuous flow

  • Expected surge volume and duration

  • Required turndown without loss of dispersion

  • Allowable water carry-over with skimmed oil

Gas generation and safe operation

Gas may be induced by recirculation equipment or introduced through a dedicated system. The design must establish gas source, composition, pressure, dispersion method and how spent gas is separated and routed.

Hazardous-area classification, ventilation, relief, gas detection and shutdown philosophy should be integrated with the host facility and clearly assigned at package battery limits.

Skimming, sludge and chemical systems

A stable surface-removal system should recover floated oil without excessive water. The package may need sludge drains, flushing and cleaning access where solids settle. Reject streams belong in the site water and waste balance.

Chemical dosing requires defined injection points, mixing time and control ranges. Treatability testing is valuable for stable emulsions or where reinjection and filtration impose limits on chemical carry-over.

Controls, testing and package scope

Typical controls cover vessel level, recirculation flow, gas pressure, skimmer operation, chemical dosing and abnormal-condition alarms. Inlet and outlet sampling points must support consistent performance tests.

A complete enquiry should define skid, vessel, piping, valves, instruments, electrical scope, control-panel interface, coatings, documentation, FAT and commissioning support.

Proof to add before publication

Add a verified process flow diagram, representative feed and outlet test data, and photographs or records from a comparable FAT. Any performance claim should name water conditions, chemical regime and analytical method.
